EARTH DAY (April 22) was proposed and promoted by Gaylord Nelson, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, in 1970. Gaylord witnessed the disastrous 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill that killed thousands of sea birds, dolphins, sea lions, and other marine life and fouled 50 miles of southern California beaches as well as the nearby Channel Islands.
EARTH DAY marked the beginning of the organized modern Environmental Movement, galvanizing millions of Americans outraged by the accelerating rate of oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, toxic dumps, pesticides, loss of wilderness, and rampant freeway construction over the previous decade. The resulting state and federal environmental regulations enacted in the early 1970’s have resulted in cleaner air and water and protected hundreds of endangered species from extinction.
